DeLay calls it quits - Yahoo! News:
"I refuse to allow liberal Democrats an opportunity to steal this seat with negative personal campaign," DeLay said in a videotaped statement released after he informed House Republican leaders of his decision on Monday.

"My love for the Republican Party has played no small part in this decision," he said, adding he wanted a House race in his district based on issues "not a campaign focused solely as a referendum on me."
He's probably right here - if he stayed, the whole of the congressional election would be a judgement against his leadership because anybody and everybody could be connected to him (especially the currently incompetant ethics committee that ignored his record).  But if he's out, then connecting someone else to him is a big case of "so what, he's yesterday's news" as far as the public and media go.

Of course, that fact says way too much about the short attention span of the public these days...

I'll give him a couple of years.  If  he's convicted, fine, he's done.  If not, I see him going for the Texas governor's seat.  He'd likely win it, given how overwhelmingly he won his primary in spite of his record.  At least just in Texas, he can't make anything worse - it'll just be business as usual for that state...

I suspect he was "strongly encouraged" to resign for just that reason.

The Republican party knows that they are in deep public relations doo-doo ... and will, no doubt, try anything to sweep such "minor nastiness" under the rug.
