At the Lord of the Rings Soundtrack official site, you can download a 27-page PDF file that is a companion to the booklet that comes in the Fellowship of the Rings Complete Recordings.  Where the booklet with the cd/dvd set describes the themes and motifs, this work directly talks about the actual tracks themselves, along with describing unused concepts and ideas (some of which made it to the original soundtrack release back in 2001).

Its worth the read, if you have the set.  It includes all of the lyrics, english and elvish/dwarvish/dark speech translations, and isn't nearly as "music theory" intensive as the book that comes with the set.  If anything, I almost think they should have published these the other way, with the track descriptions and lyrics in the set and the heavy theory and anayslis stuff as the download since its of less interest to the general purchaser.

In addition, probably to coincide with the Return of the King release (not that they've announced the Two Towers release date yet), there will be a consolidation and expansion on all of the writings of Doug Adams on the film music from these liner notes into a single book.
