i have never had a job where i got this day off, nor was it a day off from school (either high school when the holiday was enacted, or college). to me, this has never been a holiday, ever.

for that matter my current job, while having great benefits in so many other places, has the worst holiday schedule of any I've been in. 7 holidays (ny, memorial, july 4, labor, t-giving + friday, christmas day) plus one floater, that's it.

And at that, you get one more than I do - the floater.

I get the standard 7 plus three floaters, but damned if I'm going to use one today. Almost nobody else is in today, so I get a slow day where there is no expected productivity. Well, the fact that I have a 2.6-mile commute probably helps. But if I ever end up with a federal job, then I'll enjoy not having to go in on RDMLKJBO day. (Gotta love how everyone shortens it to a TLA, eh?)

Working for a nonprofit does have a few advantages...

I get those 7 and the day before or after Xmas, depending on when it falls. No floaters. Count your (agreeably, limited) blessings. ;-)

My company is based in MA so we get our choice of MLK Day or Patriot's Day in April. All of us take MLK Day because we're on a govie site and all our clients are off anyway.

It all balances. I get a lot of holidays (though not all at the 'right' time) and a fair number of days off. However, I am at the mercy of the governor for $ for my salary and face it, higher ed doesn't usually pay like your job (even in CS on campus I suspect).
