Otherwise very smart people can make horrendous spectacles of themselves. I’m not a biologist, I’m just a linguist who finds the stuff on this site very interesting, but I’ve seen plenty of professors from outside linguistics (often VERY outside) making COMPLETELY clueless pronouncements on language. A good cautionary lesson about the importance of humility…
Specifically it refers to people like Dembski, Johnson, and Wells and the many other "300 scientists who support ID", the vast majority of which are not biologists or even have medical degrees, yet all absolutely convinced that they know more than a freshman biology student about this stuff...
