Wow, what an honorable way to do it...

The CGI tv series Reboot (first of its kind) had to deal with a 2 year gap between its second and third series, thanks to the Disney buyout of ABC. Due to contractual obligations, the original actor for the voice of "Bob" was unavailable and they had to recast the part for the 3rd season. 3 years later, when they finally made a 4th series, one of the storylines involved there being two "Bobs", where one of the two looked and acted like the Bob from the earlier series. To do this well, they cast the original Bob actor for that role, while the 3rd series Bob continued the role of the "real" one.
The new Hitchhiker radio shows have followed that concept (probably unknowingly) in a remarkable way.
In the 5th book of the Trilogy, there are two universes of Trillians. In one, Trillian is the one we know from the very beginning, the other was one that had decided to go back for her purse and missed the chance to get on the Heart of Gold with Zaphod. This one moved to america to become a morning tv host ala Katie Couric.
To cast these two and keep them distinctive, Susan Sheridan, the Trillian of the original radio series who reprised her role for books 3 and 4, will continue to play the Trillian we know. The other Tricia McMillan will be played by Sandra Dickenson, the Trillian of the TV Series!
TV "Ford" David Dixon also has a role in the new radio series.
The amount of respect the producers of these new radio shows have for DNA himself and the many performers who have done characters for the Guide is astounding, its closest parallel being the (also British) Big Finish Productions with their Dr. Who audio-cds. I wish that more American companies would realize that a franchise is something to be developed with care, attention, and respect, not exploited to produce the biggest bang for the buck.
