Telarc back in '88 released a version of Wagner's Ring I can actually listen to without cringing at the stereotypical opera noises I generally don't like.
Arrainged and conducted by Lorin Maazel, Der "RING" Onhe Worte, "The 'RING' Without Words".
Its an arraingement of the highlights of the orchestral pieces of the cycle, in order, made to flow musically with bridges assembled by replacing the vocal parts with suitable instrumental parts. Every note is Wagner's own.
Sounds great so far...
Though it gets to one particular moment (no, not "kill da wabbit') and my brain still hears someone get up and yell "You Sank My Battleship!" which just goes to show just how old *I* am...
Now, on the topic of orchestral music, when the hell is Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings Symphony (and the rest of the music in the long-ago-announced 9-CD set) going to be released?
