Doug Adams (author of the liner notes and annotations for the Lord of the Rings complete recordings) and others lead a podcast that examines some of the interesting uses of the Dies Irae 13th century chant/hymn and its varied use in film music over the last century, after a brief history (with a couple of examples) from its use in classical music starting with Berlioz. The file's about 22meg, lasting about 17 minutes. Per "fair use" standards, of course, no musical excerpt is any longer than 20 seconds or so.
