stuff that makes me laugh
Sep. 24th, 2010 10:26 amso i'm watching Alistair Cooke's America, and in the modern age, they show footage of A-7's landing and launching from CV-34, which I then had to look up (only being familiar with the carriers since cv-59). She was the USS Oriskany, first started as a Ticonderoga class ship towards the end of WW2, but refitted to be a jet-supporting carrier when finally commissioned in '50. Served throughout the entire Viet Nam conflict.
In '04 she was given to the state of Florida and intentionally sunk (the deck is level at about 145 feet down) to become a reef for divers and explorers to play in.
She's now called "The Great Carrier Reef".
