...to try to guess what lawyers will do when they try to defend a company in a class action lawsuit that they themselves qualify to be a class member for the plaintiffs.

Today's case in point, the legal firm that is likely to defend Dell in their current hassle with the revelation that they've been putting out shoddy products (that might burst into flame) for the last 2 years happens to use Dell computers purchased during that window.

I'm sure there's case law on point. I'm guessing that either the firm will have to disclaim any standing in the class and any right to sue or benefit, or they'll say "we can't take this one." But that's a pie-eyed guess, no research done to back it up.
