When dealing with the extended family, younger couples often have one instruct the other to "be on your best behavior", which of course sets up an expectation that can't be met with all of the embarrassments that come out of the mistakes that are made.

Older couples better present themselves by thinking "show my family why it is that I love you, and they'll love you too."  It would be good if this is all you asked of your s.o., since it really is asking them to be themselves, if merely the better part of themselves.

Better still, if you know your s.o. enough to do that without them prompting you.

Best of all, if it wasn't hard to do that.

I've been told I succeeded.

But I'll try to remain humble.

For my fifth anniversary, I recieved the gift of an extended family exactly as large as the family [livejournal.com profile] faireraven  got when she married me.  Graciously, and in spite of all of the language difficulties involved (several members only speak Spanish), I accepted.

And even then I still found the space to learn a lot, too.

I love you, sweetie.

And I am nothing less of immensely proud of you.
