...but this current idea at Paramount of "StarFleet Acadamy" and getting new actors to play a young Kirk and Spock is just plain stupid...

one simply doesn't try to do Spock or Kirk unless one is Nimoy and Shatner - it becomes not a performance but a parody, no matter how serious one tries to be.

Actors to play the young Kirk and Spock? That sounds like a wretched no-win situation (at least for the old-trekkie audience): if their acting is worse than Nimoy's and Shatner's, they'll just suck; and if it's better, we'll all wonder how Kirk and Spock could become worse characters as they aged.

Of course, they'll probably get enough audience to make it profitable, fiasco or no fiasco. Best to just shrug it off and walk on by...

i feel the same way about "Muppet Babies" and all the other cartoon baby shows and other spinoff-ripoffs like high school Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm. it's a joke. it rarely works.

the only cartoon ever to pull it off successfully was Tiny Toons, but then, those were a new generation of cartoons being taught by the elder statesmen such as Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny. parody and new at the same time. i loved it.

it seems like it would be a no-win situation all around.

Star Trek fans will never go for it and non-fans will never give it a chance because it's Star Trek.

I actually think Muppet Babies is also an exception to the rule, if you recognize that it was doing something very different from what the Muppet Show did. Tiny Toons was the same as Looney Toons--jokes for all ages to get. So was TMS. MB was really aimed at children, but it was very good at what it did.

Almost every other attempt (A Pup Named Scooby Doo?) was a failure.

it's an "era" thing, i think. i like middle-Scooby Doos and middle-Tom & Jerry eras only. not too early; not too late.

when they try to rehash a concept to make it new again, they usually just screw it up. how many shows have tanked after adding the gratuitous cute kid to it?

take for example pretty much every movie remake of a 70s show?

on the other hand, the new Dr. Who (the original subject, no?) is fantastic!

quite a few...
