what if chess were treated like any modern game, released way too early and still undergoing rule changes as if it was in playtest mode.

Chess has gone through many changes historically, very similar to those changes pointed out in the (very humorous) article.

The following is from Wikipedia's chess article

Early on, the pieces in European chess had limited movement; bishops could only move by jumping exactly two spaces diagonally, the queen could move only one space diagonally, pawns could not move two spaces on their first move, and there was no castling.

I've also remember reading that at one point, the queen was able to move four spaces in any direction.
