Slim majority supports offshore drilling - San Jose Mercury News:
But Democrats say oil companies don't need more land to drill - on land or offshore.

The 68 million acres of unused land leased by oil companies, Democrats say, could produce an additional 4.8 million barrels of oil, nearly doubling current domestic oil production - and six times the estimated potential peak production from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
ok, this has been the news media's take on this for the last 4 days: "Democrats <i>say</i>" over and over and over and over again.  The he said she said objectivity of the media, particularly the AP, on this (non-)vote has driving me fucking nuts.

Hey news media!  I'm not paying you to tell me what "Democrats say" - I'm paying you to actually LOOK IT UP AND TELL ME IF THEY ARE LYING!!!!

You have been playing this "Democrats Say" card for 4 days, implying that they might be lying or simply wrong, and absolutely holding an uncertainty over us for something where THE REAL FACTS WOULD BE DAMN EASY TO FIND given your resources.

GO LOOK IT UP, DO SOME RESEARCH, AND TELL ME SOME TRUTH, DAMMIT!

In fact, I know that the full report would take more time than the 12 seconds you allocate to this on WTOPNews, but consider this:

If you look it up and find its true, you can stop saying "Democrats Say" every time and bring it down to 10 seconds, giving you more time to say something else!  Or if its not true, you can add the line "but research shows they are wrong" - 2 more seconds to the article, but at least we can make an informed decision on it rather than relying on unsupported speculations...

....

How about that tagline in the tv commercials for "Brideshead Revisited"?  “At last the movie INTELLIGENT filmgoers have waited for all year.”

You know, it's bad enough how much crap those of us interested in non-mainstream and "high" arts, which yes is sometimes a reflection of our intelligence but I'd more call it a reflection of our curiosity, get.  The accusation that those of us slightly higher and more selective are therefore "elitist" and out of touch with "the normal american" (like there ever was such a thing), drives me f'in' nuts.  ESPECIALLY when that accusation of elitism , simply for not taking what the media machine throws at us, becomes a political weapon and insult designed solely to create an "us vs them" situation that never should have existed.

SO, the last thing we need is for some side group in hollywood to actually be PROMOTING the idea that being interested in artistic specialities is solely a factor of intelligence.  Particularly given that I'm damned intelligent (most of the time) and have no interest in this film whatsoever!

I've not been "waiting all year" for this - I waited all year for Wall E.

I'm not the only one to think this line is ridiculous:

World of Goddess:
Love the tagline for the new movie Brideshead Revisited: “At last the movie INTELLIGENT filmgoers have waited for all year.” In the meantime, the blithering idiot filmgoers have been seeing new movies since January.
....

from WTOPNews's AP feed: House set to pass budget bill today before recess:
It had already been commonly assumed that Congress wouldn't pass many appropriations bills this year. Democratic leaders signaled they'd rather wait until next year _ when they hope a Democrat will hold the White House _ rather than wage futile battles with Bush.
those underscores are as-is from the article.

ok, why did they do such ridiculous emphasis on "when they hope" - wouldn't a simple comma have been appropriate for such an apostrophe?

by the way, who has "commonly assumed" - I don't recall there being a meeting of the Commons to assume anything...

....

btw, anybody notice in the tv teaser for "Vicky Christina Barcelona" (shown during the Today Show), from the version broadcast yesterday to version broadcast today, that the split-second girl-girl kiss in thursday's version was cut from it before it was run today?  i wonder how quickly the religious right attacked the tv networks for THAT one...bastards.  (btw, the tv teaser is also underplaying the fact that Woody Allen directed it, rather hyping up Javier Bardem as the next generation George Clooney lookalike instead).

you know, hiding it from "your children" doesn't make it not exist and doesn't make it go away.

Dispatches from the Culture Wars: "Hate Speech" Cuts Both Ways:
Spain has given us a perfect example of why hate speech laws should be abolished. Who decides what is and is not hate speech? Is it hate speech to condemn homosexuality as a sin? Or is it hate speech to condemn religious leaders for condemning homosexuality? Both? Neither?
