*sigh* I had no idea...
Jun. 24th, 2007 11:36 am...how the fandom world missed this.
Tony Jay, the incredible deep bass voice (well, baritone, technically) of many a "bad guy" in animated projects across the spectrum, and narrator on many others, died in August of last year.
I first learned to recognize his voice as the ever-oppressive Megabyte in the first tv CGI series, Reboot. Fandom geeks would actually first have heard him as the booming "Return the Map" of the animated God ("well, we don't know him that well") in Kevin's bedroom in Time Bandits.
Live-action wise, aside from his stage productions with the RSC, fandom geeks might know him as Paracelcus in a few episodes of the Beauty and the Beast tv series, and guest appearances on Night Court, Eerie Indiana, ST:TNG, and Lois and Clark. By 2000, he'd retired to strictly voice work.
For the Walt Disney Company, he provided the voice for Shere Kahn in the Jungle Book derived Tailspin tv series, a role he would return to for Jungle Book II and House of Mouse. In House of Mouse he was also the Magic Mirror and did that role for the DVD Extras of Snow White. His main original bad guy for Disney was Frollo in Hunchback of Notre Dame, which also gave his wonderful singing voice a place to shine. Finally, he provided the introductory narration for Treasure Planet.
In the video game world, he's all over the place, with WoW, several Star Trek titles, but started in that genre by being a voice on one of the earliest voice-over projects, Sierra's Kings Quest IV!
Characteristic, yet original and consistently reliable to provide a depth (literally) to anything he touched. I'll miss hearing him anew...
