Rock Concerts Friday Five
Aug. 6th, 2004 12:43 pm1. What was the first concert you ever attended? How old were you?
Where was it?
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, summer 1982, at King's Island outside Cincinati, OH
2. What was the most recent concert you attended? Where and when?
Ozric Tentacles, The Funk Box, Baltimore, just last saturday. And it so totally grooved, man...
3. Have you ever seen your favorite artist/band in concert? Did the show live up to your expectations or were you disappointed?
Of my favs -- Mike Oldfield? No. He hasn't been in America since 1983, and won't be anytime soon.
Marillion -- Yes. Twice. Both rocked. Steve Hackett -- Yes and Yes. Steve Howe -- 3 times and 3 times yes.
4. Ever been to a concert where you were pleasantly surprised at the performance? Ever been to a concert where you were totally disappointed?
pleasantly surprised? My first Fairport Convention concert, 1995. I went to that show on name-recognition alone, having no idea who they were, really. I am now, of course, a Fairport adict.
disappointed? Once. Big Time.
Pink Floyd. RFK, June 1988. I realized in this, my one and only stadium show, that Roger Waters was absolutely right the whole time. Stadium shows suck. The sound sucked, the lights sucked, the crowd sucked. Majorly. When I first saw Floyd in '87, at the Cap Centre, it was a very focused, driving, everybody was there to experience the Floyd, and it was overwhelmingly great.
At RFK, the word-of-mouth that "this is a great show" got around to those who didn't realize that they're the ones that have to make it great. It was like a Redskins game, not a music concert. People were yelling, the drunks were drunker, they were all there to be part of "the party", not part of the show itself. I hated every second of it, and swore off of ever seeing a concert in a stadium again.
5. Name five bands that would headline your own personal festival. (Along the lines of Oz Fest or Lollapalooza)
Marillion, Steve Hackett, The Flower Kings, Mostly Autumn, and the Tony Levin band
