The Science of Discontent
One thing I've noticed about political discourse lately is how... committed it is. This is a problem, a big one, one whose long-term implications are hard to overexaggerate. It's like people who decide to spout political viewpoints are unable to disassociate the people who hold the views from the views themselves.

The one and only comment tried to say he was joking, but I see his point. Its particularly poiniant when on the wrong end of a slashdot or usenet flame war. When reason gives way, it gives way to direct insult on the person, who must be an "idiot" for still holding on to the opposing view.

I'm glad that my disagreements over the current political situation with my friends [livejournal.com profile] tyma and [livejournal.com profile] dawntreader90 are such that agreeing to disagree is not only acceptable, but respected. (I'm moderate enough to support neither's argument -- but its an intential moderation, not a blase or lazy one).

Still, its quite peaceful at home, given that my wife and I tend to agree on lots of things politically...not sure I could afford a knock-down fight on anything beyond who's turn it is to do the laundry.
