time to start remembering this...*sigh*

Cocktails and calories: Beer, wine and liquor calories can really add up. Here are the breakdowns for your favorite bar beverages - Nutrition | Shape | Find Articles at BNET:
What wets your whistle? A cold beer? A slushy margarita? A glass of red wine? At a party, a happy hour or a night by the fireplace, a drink is such a natural accompaniment that sometimes we forget about the calories we're consuming. Big mistake: Calories from alcohol add up quickly. Our bodies don't register liquids in terms of fullness," says Elizabeth Somer, R.D., a nutritionist and author of The Origin Diet (Henry Holt, 2001). "The reason you gain weight from alcohol is that you don't compensate by eating less later. You still eat the same amount, regardless of whether you had the drink."

Actually, I find that when I drink alcoholic beverages, I drink alot less than when I'm drinking non-alcoholic beverages. This makes it more important for me to avoid drinking liquid calories.

If I don't have an acceptable alternative available, I will drink beer/whiskey far more than I should, just for the taste of it. And the trouble is that my brain has already said water is not an acceptable alternative (I hate the [lack of] flavor), "coke" is not an acceptable alternative (just as bad, or worse, in the calorie dept), and "diet" is not an acceptable alternative (hate the taste, and the chemicals are just as bad or worse than HFCS in other ways rather than calories).

Unsweet Ice Tea. That's it. I get my caffeine hit, I get no calories, I get something with a flavor I like so it's not "water". If that's not available, then I'm highly likely to drink too much. very depressing...though never at the time ('cause I'm drinking beer or scotch that tastes too good to notice).

My soda consumption (along with my waistline) has gone down drastically since [livejournal.com profile] keetara pointed me in the direction of the Crystal Light shakers. They have all kinds of flavors, and only 5 calories per 16-oz serving (though, personally, I use 24 oz bottles). If you don't like Nutrasweet, the 4C brand of shakers uses Splenda.

I'm with you on the diet drinks, though. The only ones I can tolerate are Diet Dr Pepper and Coke Zero - so when I have to have soda, it'll be one of those.
