the late 80s - blandness rules, it seems.

Today's AT40 on 80s on 8 is from August of 1988, after I'd graduated high school (and my second year of classic-rock-worship, so I was already mostly ignoring the pop scene by then anyways).

And it's almost entirely "dance" music.

The only rock group so far (in the 40 - 31 range) was REO and it was with "Here With Me", the late arena-rock ballad style that the big hair bands would ride to super-stardom for another 3 years until Nirvana destroyed it all as quickly as the Sex Pistols destroyed progressive rock.

So instead of memories of "god I loved that song, whatever happened to ... who I always think about when it comes on?"  Its merely a big round of "ok, I hated THAT one.  What's next?"  Still fun, but in the same sense of fun as waiting for the next song to hate during any 70s-era AT40 rerun. :)

Still, with the Moody Blues playing now (I Know You're Out There Somewhere) at number 30, work around here progresses.

update - ok, higher up things get a little more interesting, as Van Halen's "When It's Love" is on.  Ah, the peak of the Sammy years...and higher up still, GnR's Sweet Child showed up.

On the other hand, I could have done without Chubby Checker joining The Fat Boys in their rap version of The Twist.  *sigh*

And yes, 18 years later I *still* absolutely hate Tracy Chapman.

#1 song (for those who cared) - Steve Winwood's Roll With It.
