To be fair, it didn't originate with The Onion, but the Oscar host doing a "rhymes with" bit and the live tweeter taking it a step further. Kinda understandable, since there isn't a whole lot of thinking when trying to put stuff in a tweet live. Personally, Seth MacFarlane should take heat for that, more than The Onion.
